about

"Like all the work I’ve heard from The Rainbow Body this year, Free Sentient Beings is tough to write about because it makes you want to do nothing but just sit there with your eyes rolled back all tranquil, basking in its glowing warmth. With the self-released tape I reviewed earlier this year, I got some distinct solar flare-ish impressions, but this one feels much more Earthly and terrestrial, or even oceanic, although its title might suggest something more enlightened or spiritual. Or maybe it’s really a little bit of both - we listen and become one with our surroundings, something like that, right? I am the chair I’m sitting in, or the grass between my toes, or the water swirling through my hair. Free Sentient Beings, as its sine curves curl themselves up and down through space, passes through you, Matt Kattman refiguring the guitar to exist outside the realm of the instrument’s physical construction to create something that is phenomenological, metaphysical, and a bunch of other advanced philosophy adjectives that I can’t properly explain to you. So maybe I should stop trying? Let’s do this a little more simply then: Guitar-based drone. Beautiful. Maybe my favorite cover art of the year. That should cover it."

"The offerings here are composed from guitar, effects and loops. And, the first thing that comes to mind is the amount of sonic variation present. Each track is unique in structure and style, yet they all converge at the same portal of awareness. For example, in 'Free Sentient Beings 4' a spectral drone permeates the labyrinthine head. It's gentle resonance is analogous to the rush of cool air upon inhaling. The preceding track is completely different in sound. 'Free Sentient Beings 3' is a sonic vortex that sputters, protrudes, writhes and buzzes with an aura of loving kindness. Even though the sonic maelstrom is omnipresent, serenity circumscribes the mass and pulsates lightly. Unequivocally, two completely different tracks. Yet, they exhibit the adroitness with which Matt approaches art. Throughout Free Sentient Beings, layers of sound converge to emit peaceful energy. However, along with manner in which they coalesce, the timing of integrating the sounds and space afforded is equally salient. This aspect of the music is conspicuous in the first track, 'Free Sentient Beings 1'. The opening track epitomizes the loving kindness meditation. The sonic compassion which pours forth bathes the body in august light. A tranquil loop emits edifying vibrations. There is a ubiquitous quality to the sound. Maybe a minute into the track, the majestic manifests as ethereal sound is juxtaposed to the loop - beautiful! Toward the end, warm grainy undulations transport one to the zenith. The second track, perhaps, is my favorite. Full of life and melodious, elongated crystalline tones echo in the cosmos and abut sonic energy that bustles and stutters forth."

"Because the music of The Rainbow Body is also able, among other things, to provoke nostalgia not visited, to remember feelings that you're sure to have lived and are of a brutal intensity."

"Matt Kattman’s The Rainbow Body project has released another set of 4 super spacey, warm drone pieces, Free Sentient Beings on cassette. This time Kattman takes this release another step further than the last.
Free Sentient Beings is divided into a 4 part series of guitar loops and a chain of effects bringing together a vessel for this deep journey through a vast landscape of sonic textures and futuristic bleeps and echos. Unlike his previous release which I talked about a while ago, Free Sentient Beings is a little more subdued than Magnetic Highway is. The sounds on this cassette are clearer. There is less stretching of sound, and a bit more cutting up of it. On part 2 of this release, there are some really cool electronic bell kind of sounds that ring, moving in and out of focus and slowly fading in intensity. I get a really strong sense of nostalgia listening to Kattman’s instrumentals, and I’m obsessing over the amount of texture on this release in particular. I really look foward to hopefully hearing even more from him in the months to come. A++++"
-Lesserterrestrial

"A choice soundtrack for deep space exploration, The Rainbow Body’s Free Sentient Beings is space station guitar drones, and an excellent continuation of the space vibe I have been digging lately. Part 3 is particularly wonderful. It blisters and bubbles in a way which I have never heard a guitar sound. Its beautiful, the chaos and the noise against the warmth of the drones beneath. Grade A stuff from Matt. Highly recommended."
